CWRU School of Law launches new cybersecurity and data privacy specialization

Preparing legal professionals for the front lines of the digital age

As cyber threats grow more complex, the legal landscape surrounding data protection, privacy and digital risk management is evolving rapidly. Demand for cybersecurity compliance professionals is strong and growing—with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting significant job growth in compliance-related roles over the next decade.

That’s why Case Western Reserve University School of Law has launched a new Cybersecurity and Data Privacy specialization within its Compliance and Risk Management (CRM) Program. This addition reflects the evolving needs of today’s regulatory landscape and the growing demand for professionals trained at the intersection of law, technology and risk management.

The program will equip students with the legal and practical knowledge to navigate an ever-changing regulatory environment, address real-world data privacy concerns, and design effective cybersecurity compliance programs.

“In an era of escalating cyber threats and evolving data privacy regulations, understanding cyberspace is no longer optional—it's essential,” said Eric Chaffee, the John C. Hutchins Professor of Law and director of the Compliance Risk Management and Financial Integrity Institute at the School of Law. “The Cybersecurity and Data Protection Specialization positions graduates at the forefront of this high-stakes field.”

This new specialization joins a growing suite of CRM options first approved by the university’s Board of Trustees in 2020, including existing specializations in healthcare, business finance, intellectual property and environmental regulation. With the backing of Dean Paul Rose and developed by Professors Eric Chaffee, Raymond Ku and Matthew Salerno, this specialization reflects CWRU School of Law’s continued commitment to offering timely, career-relevant legal education.
