CWRU’s Shannon French speaks to Pakistan Navy War College
Shannon French, military ethicist and professor of philosophy and law at Case Western Reserve University, recently gave a lecture—titled “Ethical decision making: Codes and accountability in the AI era”—at Pakistan Navy War College in Lahore, Pakistan.
There, she also participated in a virtual Q&A session with naval officers from Pakistan and 15 other predominantly-Muslim countries. During the event, she was asked to speak about her book, The Code of the Warrior, and renewed challenges to military ethics created by the introduction of AI into targeting decisions.
Questions from the officers included various topics, including:
- Recent accusations of war crimes;
- The use of autonomous weapons systems; and,
- Accountability during and after armed conflicts.
