Department of Music and the Church of the Covenant’s Consolation

The Case Western Reserve University Department of Music and the Church of the Covenant will host a special program to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the World War I Armistice and the 50th anniversary of the McGaffin Carillon. The evening will feature music and texts to console those suffering from strife and division, comfort those who have lost loved ones and offer hope for peace. This performance, titled Consolation, will be held Friday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. at the Church of the Covenant. Tickets will cost $10 for general admission and $5 for adults 60+ and CWRU faculty and staff. The performance is free for students with their ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door or on the Department of Music’s website. Free parking will be available.

About the performance

A new work by composer David N. Childs titled Solas was commissioned for the 100th anniversary of the World War I Armistice and the 50th anniversary of the McGaffin Carillon. The piece will be premiered during Consolation. Scored for mixed chorus, strings, timpani, harp, carillon and handbells, Solas incorporates texts from well-known English poet and WWI veteran Robert Graves and Englishman Charles Hamilton Sorley. Childs will be in attendance for the first public performances of the work and will speak about his composition Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Church of the Covenant at 11:30 a.m. The Case Concert Choir, Church of the Covenant Chancel Choir and the Consolation Chamber Orchestra also will perform during the event. Musical selections for Consolation will center on romantic composers Ludwig Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Lucas de Pearsall, Max Reger and Josef Rheinberger.
