Engineers Week 2014 kicks off Friday; full schedule of events set

Feb. 13-21

Kelvin Smith Library Challenge Compete in the Kelvin Smith Library Challenge  to win daily prizes between Feb. 13 through Feb. 20. Follow the link researchguides.case.edu/kslchallenge to begin. This is an online event.

Friday, Feb. 14

Engineers Week Banquet Ticket Sales case.universitytickets.com It’s the last chance to purchase your ticket ($10 for students) to the Engineers Week Banquet, featuring alumnus and former Microsoft COO Robert Herbold. think[ box ] Open House think[ box ], Glennan Building 12:30-1:30 p.m. Learn about how to start your own projects in think[ box ] and enjoy free lunch. Society of Women Engineers luncheon Spartan Room, Thwing Center 12:30-2 p.m. Learn from the insights and experiences of Diana Strongosky, vice president of research and development at Sherwin-Williams Co. Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Night: Love and Games EECS Gaming Lab 7-10 p.m. Participate in fun and games and win Mitchell's Ice Cream coupons. Free dinner will be provided.

Saturday, Feb. 15

Engineering Carnival Great Lakes Science Center 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Students will demonstrate fun, hands-on, interactive engineering and science activities for kids of all ages. Toy Story 2 film screening Strosacker Auditorium 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Enjoy the movie, presented by the Film Society, while celebrating this year's Engineers Week theme, "Engineering: To Innovation and Beyond."

Monday, Feb. 17

Nord Chairing Ceremony for Kiju Lee Nord Atrium 4-6 p.m. Celebrate the appointment of Kiju Lee as the Nord Distinguished Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Peer Advising Ice Cream Social Wade Commons, Pioneer Room 6-8 p.m. Stop by for Mitchell's Ice Cream and to meet upperclassmen peer advisers. Learn more about different majors, what classes to take, academic opportunities and more.

Tuesday, Feb. 18

Eng-joyment Adelbert Gym 1-4 p.m. Enjoy obstacle courses and other games—and win Mitchell's Ice Cream prizes. Engineers Week Trivia Night Jolly Scholar 8-10 p.m. Participate in classic Jolly Scholar trivia with an Engineers Week twist. Form a team and stop by for food, drinks and entertainment.

Wednesday, Feb. 19

Engineering Showcase Fair Hovorka Atrium 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Enjoy Jimmy Johns and pizza while learning about various engineering student groups’ and departments’ work.

Thursday, Feb. 20

Women in Science and Engineering (WISER) Lightbulb Drop Nord Hall 356 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Participate in WISER's annual E-Week Design Competition. Teams of students will compete for cash prizes, with $250 for the winner, donated by Phillips Lighting. Society For Biomaterials Lab Tours Wickenden Lobby 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Visit and learn about biomaterials research in selected labs and connect with graduate students, post-doctoral students and professors about the field. Engineers Week Banquet Intercontinental Hotel 5:30-9 p.m. Celebrate the contributions of engineers in society with keynote speaker Bob Herbold, Case Western Reserve alumnus and former COO of Microsoft. Student tickets will be sold for $10.

Friday, Feb. 21

High School Balsa Model Bridge Competition Location: Bingham Structures Lab 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Watch this competitive event that challenges high-school students to build a bridge using only balsa and wood glue. The bridges are tested to destruction and the maximum load is recorded. Prizes are awarded for the best design and the largest strength-to-weight ratio.
