Food Forum to raise awareness about problems in the food system with events April 11-15

Food Forum, a collection of all the hunger- and food-related student groups on campus, will host Food Week April 11-15. Throughout the week, the organizations will host activities focused on raising awareness about problems in the food system.

Monday, April 11

The week will kick off with a local food market in Thwing Center atrium from noon to 2 p.m. Tickets for food will be sold at the door and there will be a one-time $2 entry donation to the Cleveland Food Bank, which will get visitors a free Old City Soda in one of a variety of flavors. In Tinkham Veale University Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., local farms will have stand open.

Tuesday, April 12

Food Recovery Network will co-host Thwing Tuesday with University Program Board to give students free pastries and hats. Attendees also will learn about Food Recovery Network’s mission.

Wednesday, April 13

Slow Food will showcase its work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Case Quad. A free screening of Just Eat It, a critically acclaimed documentary, will be held at 6 p.m. in Thwing Center ballroom. The documentary provides a commentary on how commercial standards lead to billions of dollars of wasted food each year. A free popcorn bar will be available.

Thursday, April 14

The Food Law & Policy Society will talk about expiration date regulations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Case Quad. Eric Holt-Giménez, executive director of Food First/Institute for Food and Development Policy, will speak at 4:30 p.m. in the Iris S. and Bert L. Wolstein Research Building auditorium. He will address the structural inequity and inherent unsustainability of the current food system and the role and challenges for the food movement in systems transformation.

Friday, April 15

Advocates for Cleveland Health will detail its mission in Nord Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Simply Greek in Uptown also will donate 20 percent of its profits from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. to the Cleveland Food Bank. More information about the week of events is available online.
