The Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship: 20 Years of Innovation
Celebrate two decades of discovery at Kelvin Smith Library and Case Western Reserve University with digital scholarship workshops and an afternoon of programming.
The Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship at Kelvin Smith Library is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a formal reception on Sept. 25 from 1 to 4:30 p.m., featuring an open house with hands on-demonstrations, a retrospective digital exhibit, conversations with former Freedman faculty fellows and project presentations from the current fellows. The center is continuing its celebration throughout the fall semester with incentives for its digital scholarship workshop series.
Early in the planning for Kelvin Smith Library, leadership envisioned the Freedman Center as an innovative and forward-looking addition to campus. Since its opening in 2005, the center has seen the advancement of home computers, the invention of smartphones and tablets and the advent of generative AI. The Freedman Center has evolved alongside these advancements, accelerating technology-enabled teaching and empowering researchers, faculty and students with expert support and opportunities for funding and collaboration.
Members of the CWRU community are invited to join the Kelvin Smith Library as the Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship toasts to its 20th anniversary with dynamic workshops, technology demonstrations, faculty presentations and community celebration.
The opening demonstrations will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. and will include:
- Hotogrammetry of a 2,000 year old amphora,
- Language models trained on classic literature,
- Mapping with ArcGIS, and
- Hands-on virtual reality and other emerging technologies.
Food and refreshments will also be available throughout the afternoon, with opportunities to connect with faculty, students, researchers and specialists as they present on current and emerging research that uses innovative technologies.
“Two Decades of Discovery,” a digital exhibit chronicling the Freedman Center’s history and impact, is now available to preview ahead of its official Sept. 25 premiere at the celebration.
Leading up to and after the event on Sept. 25, the center will host its fall digital scholarship workshop series. Every event attended features one entry to win Starbucks gift cards, Freedman Center merchandise and more.
