A group of CWRU researchers have work published in ACS SENSORS

A group of researchers recently had a paper titled “Neutral Charged Immunosensor Platform for Protein based Biomarker Analysis with Enhanced Sensitivity” published in ACS SENSORS. The authors of the paper were:

• Yifan Dai, PhD candidate in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering;
• Liang-yuan Chiu, PhD candidate in the Department of Chemistry;
• Yinuo Chen, an undergraduate student;
• Shiyi Qin, an undergraduate student;
• Xiaowei Wu, of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering; and
• Chung Chiun Liu, Distinguished University Professor and the Wallace R. Persons Professor of Sensor Technology & Control.

Paper description

The researchers developed a novel biosensing strategy as a universal electrochemical method for profiling of circulating protein markers. Unlike conventional electrochemical biosensors using surface-impedance change to quantify biomarkers, the group applied a unique quantification method based on the electrostatic interaction of analyte with certain redox probe. Their research provided a new understanding of the interaction between surface immobilized protein and electrochemical redox probe. Based on the proposed electrostatic-interaction model, the researchers developed a neutral-charged immunosensor platform, which was demonstrated by the detection of Tau protein (a biomarker of neuro-degenerative disorders) and HE4 protein (a biomarker of ovarian cancer).
