Imani Behrens—Outstanding New Dentist Alumni Award recipient
School of Dental Medicine awards highest honors
As the recipient of the Outstanding New Dentist Award, Imani Jacqueline Behrens, DMD (DEN ’22), MS, is recognized for an exceptional early-career standard defined by her dedication to pediatric patient care, clinical innovation, organized dentistry and ongoing connection to her alma mater.
While at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Behrens served as president of the Class of 2022 Student Council. After graduation, she completed a pediatric dentistry residency at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), treating diverse patient populations, including underserved and medically complex patients. She also earned a Master of Oral Sciences at UIC; her thesis on the use of teledentistry to educate caregivers about pediatric oral health earned her the Dr. Indru C. Punwani Graduate Student Research Award.
Today, Dr. Behrens divides her time between advanced private practice and public health dentistry in Illinois. At Dental Art Specialists in Evanston, she uses Solea Laser technology to provide anesthesia-free pediatric care, helping young patients feel comfortable. At Apple Dental Care in Chicago, she serves primarily Medicaid-insured patients and performs full-mouth dental rehabilitations under general anesthesia.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Behrens is actively involved in organized dentistry and alumni relations. As a branch coordinator for the Chicago Dental Society, she recently organized a Pediatric Dentistry Advocacy Panel to support oral health policy. She also serves on the CWRU School of Dental Medicine Alumni Association Board of Directors and its Strategic Planning Committee, promoting alumni engagement, fundraising and mentorship.
Kristin A. Williams, DDS (DEN ’89), MPH (GRS ’05), associate dean for admissions and student affairs, nominated Dr. Behrens for the honor.
“Dr. Behrens has demonstrated outstanding dedication, skill and compassion throughout her time here as a dental student and continues to show leadership skills, volunteer opportunities and an exceptional work ethic,” Williams said. “Her commitment to providing quality care to underserved populations and her innovative approaches to oral health education make her a deserving candidate.”
