U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman appointed Jessie Hill, associate dean for academic affairs and the Judge Ben C. Green Professor of Law, to help nominate a candidate to fill the vacancy on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.
Hill will act as part of a bipartisan judiciary advisory commission.
"It is an honor to be a part of this commission, and I look forward to assisting with its important work,” Hill said.
The commission will assist in filling the vacancy created by Gregory L. Frost after he retired in May. He had served in the role since 2003.
The Southern District has court locations in Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton and serves more than 5 million Ohioans in 48 counties.
Paul Harris, general counsel at Key Bank, is chair of the commission. Hill is one of 17 additional members.
The United States president selects U.S. District Court judges based on recommendations from U.S. Senators. The full U.S. Senate must then confirm nominees. U.S. District Courts are general trial courts, which hear both civil and criminal cases.
