The weekly Public Affairs Discussion Group will continue this Friday with a talk titled "The Conspiracy Against Obamacare: How Academic Bloggers Influenced the Legal Battle Over the Individual Mandate."
Jonathan Adler, the Johan Verheij Memorial Professor of Law and director of the Center for Business Law and Regulation at the School of Law, will lead the discussion on Friday, Jan. 31, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Dampeer Room at Kelvin Smith Library.
At the meeting, Adler will discuss the ways in which he and fellow academics worked to argue the potentially unconstitutional implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Though Adler and his colleagues' ideas won support from members of the Supreme Court, the individual mandate was upheld. Alder also developed other arguments that remain unsettled and still could affect implementation of the law.
Also, the group will discuss the theory, constitutionality and timeline of the Affordable Care Act.
Since 1989, faculty, emeriti, students and staff have gathered on Fridays for a brown-bag lunch and to discuss topics in public affairs.
