Learn about the music of Kurt Weill with a Siegal Lifelong Learning Program course in January

The Siegal Lifelong Learning Program will host a course titled “Onstage with Kurt Weill” Wednesdays Jan. 2-23 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Landmark Centre Building (25700 Science Park Drive, Beachwood). Don Rosenberg, president of Music Critics Association of North America, will teach the course.

Course description

Before he was forced to flee Germany in 1933, Kurt Weill had developed a successful career as the composer of concert works, operas and, especially, a provocative stage piece with Bertolt Brecht, titled “The Threepenny Opera.” Weill arrived in the United States in 1935 and immersed himself in American popular music. He soon wrote (and, unusual for the field, orchestrated) the scores for Broadway shows and films. The course will cover Weill’s Berlin years and his achievements in America until his untimely death in 1950 at the age of 50. For members of the Lifelong Learning Program, the course costs $62.
