Make a will. Make a difference.

National Make-A-Will Month is a reminder to protect your loved ones, reflect your values and plan for your future

Making a will is something many people put off—and the numbers reflect it. Nearly two out of every three Americans do not have a will, leaving important decisions and final wishes vulnerable to uncertainty.

National Make-A-Will Month is a nationwide initiative encouraging individuals and families to create or revisit their estate plans, regardless of age or state of life. If you already have a will, now may be a good time to review it and ensure it still reflects your wishes for the people and causes most important to you.

For those just getting started, Case Western Reserve University’s Office of Strategic Giving offers a free estate-planning resource through its partnership with FreeWill. Using the secure online platform, you can create or update your will in about 20 minutes.

Experts recommend reviewing your will every three to five years, or after major life events such as marriage, retirement, the birth of a new child or grandchild, or the loss of a loved one. It is also important to review assets that pass outside a will—including life insurance policies, retirement accounts and donor advised funds—to ensure beneficiary designations still align with your intentions.

Because estate-planning requirements vary by state, individuals should consult a qualified estate-planning attorney licensed in their state to ensure documents are properly drafted, executed and legally valid.

Creating a will does not have to be overwhelming. Taking even a small step now can provide clarity and peace of mind for you and your loved ones in the future.
