Healthline: Mahmoud Ghannoum, professor at the School of Medicine, discussed research linking the gut microbiome to the severity of COVID-19. In those studies, patients with more severe COVID-19 tend to have a decreased microbial diversity in the intestines, he said. In addition, he noted they often have a reduction in beneficial microbes that help support the immune system and an increase in pathogenic microbes, those that “cause trouble.”
