Wired: Amy Edwards, associate professor of pediatrics at the School of Medicine, explained how measles can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, and death. “The crux of the disease is that it’s caused by this particular bacteria, Bordetella pertussis, which creates a toxin, and that toxin can be very damaging to our lungs,” said Edwards.
