New drone technology to assist with campus window cleaning this summer
Last week, members of the Case Western Reserve University community may have seen an unusual sight on campus: a drone helping clean the windows of university buildings.
Custodial Services has partnered with contractor American National Skyline, LLC (ANSI) to complete window cleaning across campus this summer. This marks the first time CWRU will use drone technology as part of its window-cleaning efforts.
The drone will be used on taller buildings—those more than four stories—to help clean exterior windows safely and efficiently. A demonstration of the technology was conducted at Millis Hall in March, and the contractor will begin scheduled drone cleanings this summer. The cleaning process uses window detergent followed by a rinse with deionized water, allowing the windows to dry without streaks or residue.
While residence hall windows have traditionally been cleaned inside and out during the summer months, this project marks the first time in nearly 30 years that all exterior windows on academic buildings across campus will be cleaned.
Because of the buildup of etched dirt and grime over time, it may take multiple cleanings for the windows of academic buildings to reach the desired level of clarity. The university will continue working with ANSI throughout the summer to establish cleaning schedules and share updates with the campus community.
