New strains of bacteria fight off antibiotics
The Columbus Dispatch: Heidelberg is the strain of salmonella linked to the widespread outbreak, and it’s one of several that have evolved to fight off many antibiotics. “If a patient’s immune system is compromised or the disease becomes more than diarrhea, the bacteria can’t be controlled with normal antibiotics and then it can be a problem,” said Robert Bonomo, professor of molecular biology and microbiology.
