From rooftop patios to hiking trails, members of the Case Western Reserve University community have no shortage of favorite spots to soak in Cleveland’s best views.

In honor of World Photography Day (Aug. 19), we asked students, faculty and staff to share the places—both on and off campus—that take their breath away. Their responses ranged from peaceful lakefront sunsets to bustling downtown streets, proving that beauty in Cleveland can be found whether you’re exploring a Cleveland Metroparks trail or settling into a cozy window seat at Kelvin Smith Library.

For fourth-year student Ify Chidi, who’s studying medical anthropology and public health, natural escapes top the list—especially Squire’s Castle and the Cleveland Metroparks trails, along with Cuyahoga Valley National Park. She also counts the CWRU University Farm among her favorites, calling herself its “biggest supporter” after learning to ski, sled and tap maple trees there.

Lex Ehrenschwender, associate general counsel in the Office of General Counsel, echoed this love of nature: “I love to look out at the lake,” he said. “I think it is amazing that we have something so gorgeous right here in Cleveland.”

Others are drawn to the city’s urban energy. Sharitta Thomas, audit specialist in Audit Services, recalled spotting beautiful city views during downtown runs last summer—including an overhead shot of the Superman movie set.

Srila Munukutla, a second-year medical anthropology student, finds her favorite view inside Playhouse Square’s Connor Palace just before a show begins, when the lights dim and the stillness sets in.

For Juan A. J. Jeffrey, research assistant at Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, nothing beats fishing along the E. 55th Street breakwall at sunset—or enjoying rooftop views of the solar eclipse, aurora borealis and International Space Station flyover. He also treasures evenings at Shaker Lakes, fishing and cooking barbecue with friends, and casting a line along the Ohio & Erie Canal.
