The power of one: How to make an impact on an individual level

I have the privilege of working with one of the most wonderful (and youthful!) octogenarians as she directs her philanthropy at Case Western Reserve. She often calls the university the “best playground”—a phrase I love because it captures the joy and boundless possibility that individual giving can unlock. From providing seed funding for artificial intelligence projects to supporting cutting-edge laser technology used by both the dance and physics departments, she chooses initiatives that spark something greater.

Many people want to make a difference but aren’t sure where to start—or whether their support truly matters. As assistant vice president for strategic giving, I wanted to take the time to answer some common questions I hear.

Are endowments the best way to make an impact?

Endowments are powerful tools for long-term impact and sustainability. They also offer opportunities to create a named legacy or honor someone special. But they’re not the only way!  My colleagues and I are here to help you find the giving approach that fits your goals and values.

Why does my support matter?

Because it touches every part of our mission. Whether you choose to support scholarships, research, hands-on learning or innovative programming, your generosity fuels the experiences that help our students and faculty thrive.

How much do I need to give to make a difference?

Every gift—no matter the amount—joins with others to create something greater.  That collective support drives real change across our campus, every single day. At Case Western Reserve, philanthropy isn’t about the size of the gift. It’s about finding joy in supporting the people and programs that inspire you. Like the donor who sees CWRU as her playground, you too can explore, experiment and leave your mark—one meaningful gift at a time.
