Professional Development Center offers training sessions for faculty and staff

The Professional Development Center hosts training sessions for Case Western Reserve University staff and faculty on a wide range of topics. In October, the center will offer courses on management development, emotional intelligence and conflict management as well as a New Supervisor Orientation. Emotional Intelligence Series

Two sessions of the Emotional Intelligence Series will be held in October.

Part II: “Using Emotions”

In this session, participants will learn about the role of positive and negative emotions and how to use them appropriately. The session will take place Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 9 a.m. to noon in Tinkham Veale University Center, First-Floor Conference Room. Register online for “Using Emotions” by Thursday, Sept. 27.

Part III: “Understanding Emotions”

In this session, participants will explore how emotions evolve over time and develop an emotional vocabulary. The session will take place Thursday, Oct. 18, from 9 to 10 a.m. in Tinkham Veale University Center, First-Floor Conference Room. Register online for “Understanding Emotions” by Thursday, Oct. 11.

Management Development Series

The Management Development Series will continue with two October sessions.

Part III: “Creating a Motivation Environment”

In this interactive, three-hour course, participants will learn how to apply the DiSC behavioral styles to various situations that require them to create a motivating environment for others. The session will take place Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon in Tinkham Veale University Center, First-Floor Conference Room. Part IV: “Strategy & Developing Others”

This interactive, three-hour course will cover aligning mission, vision and departmental goals with the development of individuals. The session will take place Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon in Tinkham Veale University Center, First-Floor Conference Room. “New Supervisor Orientation”

There will also be a day-long session targeted to new supervisors Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Crawford Hall, Room 209. Participants will attend several workshops throughout the day, providing new supervisors with the skills and knowledge necessary to start their new roles successfully. All staff and faculty who have started their first CWRU supervisory role within the last year—including external hires, internal hires and internal promotions—are welcome to attend, whether or not they have previous supervisory experience. “Introduction to Conflict Management”

Conflict is inevitable, but it doesn’t have to be painful. How conflict is managed determines whether it is helpful or unhelpful. In this workshop, participants will take the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument self-assessment and receive a customized report about their typical behavior in conflict situations. Using their results as a guide, participants will explore why people engage in conflict and the different ways one can approach conflict. The workshop will take place Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. to noon in Crawford Hall, Room 209. Participants also will explore why humans engage in conflict, the different ways to approach it and how to effectively utilize the different conflict-handling modes depending on the situation.
