Provost W.A. “Bud” Baeslack III today announced the appointment of Brian D. Voss as interim chief information officer (CIO) while the university concludes its search for a permanent CIO.
Voss, who recently retired as vice president and CIO at the University of Maryland at College Park, has three decades of experience working with information technology at institutions of higher education.
“I am grateful to Brian for agreeing to assist the university during this time of transition,” Baeslack said. “Our search for a permanent CIO is in its final stages, and Brian will provide invaluable leadership to Information Technology Services as we await the arrival of the new appointee.”
Voss spent three years at the University of Maryland, where he directed IT strategy, infrastructure and services. During that time, he also served as a member of the board of EDUCAUSE, a nonprofit organization of IT leaders, including more than 1,800 universities, focused on ways technology can advance higher education. From 2012 to 2014, he also served on the board of the Kuali Foundation, an organization devoted to providing software that meets higher education’s unique needs.
Before joining the University of Maryland, Voss spent six years as vice chancellor for information technology and CIO at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Previously, he spent nearly
20 years in positions of increasing responsibility within Indiana University’s information technology operations. He earned an undergraduate degree in industrial engineering from Purdue University.
Voss is expected to serve as interim CIO through mid-October, when the university expects to have a permanent CIO in place. The search committee, led by College of Arts & Sciences Dean Cyrus Taylor, has spent the past several months assessing the university’s IT needs and evaluating potential candidates. The group has recommended finalists to the provost, and those individuals are amid the concluding rounds of the process.
