Q&A: Critical care and the COVID-19 pandemic

Healio: Abhijit Duggal, assistant professor of medicine, shared his thoughts on the spread of the coronavirus: “The big concern — and this is true for any kind of viral pandemic situation — is that we really don’t know what the peak of this disease process is going to be. Is it going to last for several weeks or will it be more prolonged? Usually, whenever you’re in a pandemic situation, we look at our experience from previous viral outbreaks and pandemics. What we know is that the disease could peak for a short time and then stabilize over a couple of weeks or months or it could be prolonged, which is what we saw in 2009 with the H1N1 pandemic.”
