Can empty nesters still afford to splurge? SmartMoney: As parents become empty nesters, they often think their spending days are over, but they end up spending more money because they have more freedom. That, in turn, causes them to seek employment, oftentimes starting their own businesses. “Contrary to the popular opinion that entrepreneurship is a young people's game,” said Scott Shane, A. Malachi Mixon III Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies, “it increases as people get older.”
