The Baroque Orchestra will perform “On second thought: 18th-century orchestral arrangements,” directed by Julie Andrijeski and assistant directed by Alice Culin-Ellison.
The event will take place Monday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Harkness Chapel.
About the performance
Reimagining a favorite tune, whether one’s own or the work of another, is a time-honored practice that continues to this day. This performance highlights a few 18th-century composers with a knack for cover tunes and remixes, including:- Johann Sebastian Bach, who reassigned solo passages to keyboards rather than violins in his Concerto for Two Harpsichords;
- Charles Avison, who turned one of Domenico Scarlatti’s fiery harpsichord sonatas into a full-blown orchestral concerto grosso; and
- George Frideric Handel, whose many arrangements and self-borrowings are well-known.
