Case Western Reserve University’s Social Justice Institute, WVIZ ideastream, KeyBank and Children’s Defense Fund–Ohio are sponsoring a sneak preview of the PBS documentary Slavery By Another Name Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Karamu House (2355 E. 89th St.). The documentary, which will air Feb. 13 at 9 p.m. on PBS, looks at the little-known story of the post-Emancipation era and the labor practices and laws that effectively created a new form of slavery in the south that persisted into the 20th century. The documentary is a Sundance Film Festival selection.
The event will feature special guests Douglas A. Blackmon, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and co-executive producer of the documentary, and Catherine Allan, co-executive producer and executive producer of the film Hoop Dreams.
After the preview, ideastream’s Dee Perry will moderate a panel comprising Rhonda Y. Williams, director of the Social Justice Institute and associate professor of history; Rev. Otis Moss, part of President Obama’s White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnership Council; and Joseph Worthy, national coordinator of youth leadership and development at the Children’s Defense Fund.
