Learn new skills at University Farm this spring, with classes to be offered on beekeeping and culinary herbs.
“The ABCs of Honey Bees”
Thinking about picking up beekeeping or want to gain more knowledge as a beekeeper? Plan to attend the upcoming “ABCs of Honey Bees” course offered by Case Western Reserve University’s Squire Valleevue and Valley Ridge Farms.
In conjunction with the Farm Administration, Richard Manley, University Farm’s beekeeping consultant for more than five years, will teach the course Saturday, March 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
He will cover all aspects of beginning beekeeping, honeybee biology and diseases, and hive management.
Weather permitting, students will be able to participate in hives inspection, including observation of brood, honey and pollen cells.
The course is $48 per participant. A minimum of six participants will be required to offer course.

“Culinary Herbs Basics”
Find out how you can improve the taste of your food with the “Culinary Herbs Basics” course offered by the Laura and Alvin Siegal Lifelong Learning Program.
Sharon Halkovics, Farm Food Program coordinator, will lead the course.
She will teach techniques for growing annual and perennial herbs, how to store and preserve them for future use, and share a variety of ways to use them in cooking.
This course will be held Saturday, April 1, and Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Green Barn Classroom at University Farm.
The course costs $25 for Lifelong Learning Program members or $35 for non-members.
