Two-factor authentication becomes mandatory for VPN users April 20; visit Freedman Center today for help

This past January, Case Western Reserve University incorporated two-factor authentication into the Virtual Private Network (VPN). Using two-factor authentication has been optional; however, effective April 20, users must use two-factor authentication to access the VPN. Today, Information Technology Services will host a walk-in session for any member of the university community needing assistance with the setup and use of two-factor authentication. Students, faculty and staff members are invited to visit the Freedman Center in the Kelvin Smith Library from 1 to 3:30 p.m. to consult with an ITS staff member. Visitors are encouraged to bring their devices as well as their questions.

What is two-factor authentication?

Two-factor authentication protects accounts in the event that passwords are lost or stolen. When logging in to a service, such as the VPN, two-factor authentication asks for the user to enter a unique code in addition to the password. The unique code is usable only once, and it is accessible from the device of the user’s choosing (typically their cell phone). Each time the user logs in, they are given a new code. They already may be familiar with a similar service through their bank or personal email account.

What do I need to do?

Starting at 12:01 a.m. April 20, users must be enrolled in Duo Security—CWRU’s two-factor authentication service—to continue using the VPN. During the enrollment process, users will provide their cell phone number or other form of communication in order to receive their unique code moving forward. When logging in to the VPN, users will type your unique code into the “Second Password” field. Enrollment in Duo Security is quick and easy. Simply visit case.edu/its/information-security/duo/ to begin. (If users are already using Duo Security, they may disregard this message and take no further action.)
