The Leonard Gelfand STEM Center will host the Elementary Science Olympiad competition on campus on Saturday, March 3. The Elementary Science Olympiad is a local event in which teams of fourth- to sixth-grade level students compete for medals in any of 25 scheduled STEM- (science, technology, engineering and math) focused events.
The center is seeking volunteers to support this program in two key ways: serving as event captains and event volunteers.
Event captains
Event captains develop a specific event in advance of the competition based on a given description. On the day of the event, captains execute and manage all of the event activities. The total estimated hours of service is 10-15 hours, including event preparation. Eight of the 25 competitive events scheduled still need volunteer captains:- Circuit Wizardry;
- Disease Detectives,
- Don’t Bug Me;
- Wright Stuff;
- Egg Drop;
- Experimental Design-Mystery Architecture;
- Herpetology; and
- Potions and Poisons
Event volunteers
All 25 of the scheduled events need volunteers to help support the competitions. Event volunteers:- Administer and/or proctor events;
- Help manage and evaluate hands-on competitions;
- Score events;
- Record competition results in scoring center;
- Attend registration tables for arriving teams;
- Check in event captains and volunteers;
- Manage event supplies;
- Distribute awards at closing ceremonies;
- Take candid photos of events and create slide program; or
- Fill in where needed.
