Welcome to the beginning of the 2026–2027 academic year

The 2026–2027 academic year is off to an inspiring start at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. In recent weeks, we have welcomed our MD and MSA students at meaningful White Coat ceremonies, celebrated the graduation of our PA class and are preparing to recognize our PhD students at their White Coat ceremony this week.

These milestones highlight the vitality and momentum of our school. We have completed our new Strategic Plan and will share it with the community in the coming month. Our educational and research programs continue to excel, while our community-facing initiatives are expanding in both reach and impact.

At the same time, academic medicine is navigating powerful currents of change—shifting expectations, new pressures and evolving opportunities. We are meeting this moment with care, balance and confidence, while remaining firmly focused on our mission: to improve health globally by linking groundbreaking innovation and research directly to patients and populations within a world-class medical and education ecosystem.

This mission has never been more important. Improving health requires urgency, purpose and sustained attention to the most pressing challenges before us:
  • Learning, understanding and unraveling the mysteries of illness
  • Developing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches where none yet exist
  • Anticipating and preventing disease whenever possible
  • Leading when we are uniquely positioned to do so

Innovation is central to our work and to meeting this urgency. We see it in the responsible and creative use of artificial intelligence, in cross-disciplinary approaches to health and disease, and in our commitment to turning discoveries into meaningful benefits for patients and communities. With that spirit in mind, it is no surprise that here at CWRU School of Medicine, we create careers to cure diseases—and in so doing, improve lives.

Our greatest strength is our extraordinary medical ecosystem. Faculty, students and staff—together with our partners at Cleveland Clinic, Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, MetroHealth System and University Hospitals—have an exceptional opportunity to align our talents and resources to improve health locally, nationally and globally.

Looking ahead, we will:

  • Support and coordinate our 30+ education and research centers and institutes
  • Advance our undergraduate, master’s, MD, PhD and professional programs
  • Strengthen our research enterprise through continued investments in infrastructure, shared resources and collaboration
  • Enhance faculty development and leadership to ensure our collective success

We are well positioned for what the future will bring—and, more importantly, we intend to accelerate that future in medicine. I am grateful for the talent, dedication and optimism each of you brings to this work, and I look forward to all we will accomplish together in the year ahead.

Together, let’s continue to be a force for discovery, healing and progress—at CWRU, in Cleveland and around the world.

Sincerely,

Stan Gerson, MD
Dean and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs
