What you need to know about iOS 8, iPhone 6 at Case Western Reserve

Information Technology Services (ITS) recognizes that many members of the university community use the Apple iPhone, iPad or iPod as their primary mobile devices. On Sept. 17, Apple released its newest mobile operating system, iOS 8, as well as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Before purchasing, consider the following:

iOS 8

Among other features, iOS 8 offers users more interactive notifications, swipe-based keyboards and the ability to share App Store purchases with family members. But iOS 8 is a brand-new operating system, which means there may be problems that have yet to be discovered and fixed. If you heavily rely on your iOS device for university business, consider waiting to download iOS 8 until Apple releases an updated version in the coming weeks. Additionally, campus users have reported issues when running iOS 8 on their iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S devices. At this time, ITS does not recommend installing iOS 8 on these older models. iPhone 6 + iPhone 6 Plus

The university partners with AT&T, Verizon and Sprint to supply departments with mobile devices and service for qualifying employees. Because of these existing agreements, new phone upgrades for employees must be processed through ITS’ Telephone Services and the appropriate carrier. Employees cannot upgrade their university-issued equipment by visiting an Apple Store or other Apple-authorized retailer. University departments will not be able to purchase the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models until the carriers replenish their supplies. At present, this is expected to occur later this fall.
