The Flora Stone Mather Center for Women will host a Women's History Month Luncheon March 9 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Thwing Center’s Spartan Room.
During the event, attendees will recognize and pay homage to women in “HERstory.” In particular, the activist work of Victoria Woodhull—the first woman to operate a brokerage, start a weekly newspaper and run for president—will be discussed. Born in 1838, Woodhull also was first woman to appear before the House Judiciary Committee to discuss women’s suffrage. In 1870, although women did not have the right to vote, she became the first woman U.S. presidential candidate. An activist in women’s rights and humanitarian causes she left her mark as one of history’s most remarkable characters.
