Discover undergraduate research

Research is one of the many ways you can learn beyond the classroom at Case Western Reserve University. Whether you're interested in science, engineering, the humanities, social sciences, business, nursing or the arts, research gives you the opportunity to explore questions that matter to you while working alongside faculty mentors.

You don't need previous research experience to get started. In fact, many students begin exploring research opportunities during their first year at CWRU.

The Undergraduate Research Office is dedicated to helping undergraduate students find meaningful research experiences. Whether you already have an area of interest or are still exploring your options, the staff can help you:

  • Learn what undergraduate research is and how to get involved
  • Find research opportunities that match your interests and goals
  • Connect with faculty members who are looking for student researchers
  • Develop your own research ideas and projects
  • Find funding for summer research experiences
  • Apply for funding to travel and present your work at conferences
  • Share your work through presentations, publications and CWRU's undergraduate research journal

Participating in research allows you to apply what you're learning in class, strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and explore potential career paths or graduate study. Just as importantly, it gives you the opportunity to discover what interests you and build confidence through hands-on learning.

If you're not sure where to begin, the Undergraduate Research Office recommends attending an "All About Finding Research" information session. These sessions introduce students to the research opportunities available at CWRU, explain how to connect with faculty mentors and provide practical tips for getting started.

Remember, you don't need to have everything figured out before you begin. Curiosity is the only requirement. If you have questions, enjoy solving problems, or want to explore a topic more deeply, undergraduate research can be a rewarding part of your CWRU experience.
