Hidden gems students love (off the main path)

By Hannah, Class of 2028

During my first semester on campus, I found myself spending time in the same three buildings, wishing I knew where to adventure. So I have compiled a few places that I have visited, explored and stumbled upon that hold some of my favorite memories (and longest lock-ins!)

Cleveland Museum of Art atrium

Whether art aficionado or not, the CMA atrium offers the feel of outdoor studying with the shelter of a temperature-controlled interior. Nearby, a cafeteria provides warm drinks and treats for all your study snack needs, as well as a few wall outlets for recharging. If you’re lucky, students from Cleveland Institute of Music occasionally perform live, or you might even witness a cute marriage proposal.

Lakes and the Cultural Gardens

As someone who truly believes in the power of touching grass every day, two nearby lakes stand out offering a rejuvenating breeze of life for walking, running or even just chatting. Lake Erie sits a 5k distance from the north side of campus with a natural path through the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. Along this pathway are various statues, gardens and art representing countries around the world. On the south side at a brief 2-mile distance is the Lower Shaker Lake, perfect for sunset watching or getting lost in the trees.

Wade Memorial Chapel at Lakeview Cemetery

This is a stunning piece of architecture complete with a breathtaking stained glass window, rich with CWRU history. Yes, it is in the cemetery; yes it is worth it.

Bakeries (Luna’s and Corbos)

The walk down Cedar Road to Luna’s Bakery is absolutely worth it. With its bustling bakery and baristas, Luna’s gives a quaint coffee shop feel with quality brunch items and a cozy study nook. Corbo’s is nestled in Little Italy and provides a seemingly endless assortment of fresh bakery goods. Their warm cannolis and chocolate lava bomb are the perfect study motivation.
