Tips to navigate Discover Week

Remember that everyone is new in some way

Starting college can bring a mix of excitement, curiosity, uncertainty and even overwhelm. Those feelings are completely normal. Whether you're the first in your family to attend college, you're transferring from another institution, or you're simply adjusting to a new environment, Discover Week at Case Western Reserve University is designed to help you get settled. You don't have to figure everything out this week—we'll help you take it one step at a time.

Lean on your orientation leaders

Your orientation leaders are here to answer questions, explain campus traditions, help you find your way around and connect you with resources. No question is too small. If you're unsure where to go, what something means or whom to ask, start with them.

Find your community in your own way

College isn't about meeting everyone—it's about finding people and places where you feel comfortable being yourself. Whether you live on campus or commute, you'll have opportunities to connect with classmates, faculty, staff and other students. It's OK if making friends takes time. Some people enjoy large group activities, while others connect best through smaller conversations or shared interests. There isn't one "right" way to build community.

Take advantage of opportunities to meet faculty and staff

Your professors, advisors and staff members genuinely want to help you succeed. Introducing yourself and asking a question can make it easier to seek support later in the semester. Building these connections early can make college feel a little smaller and more manageable.

Take care of yourself throughout the week

Discover Week is busy, and it's important to listen to what your body and mind need. Try to get enough sleep, eat regular meals, stay hydrated and take breaks when you need them. It's OK to step away from the excitement for a few minutes if you need a quiet moment to recharge. Taking care of yourself will help you make the most of the week.

Be prepared for Cleveland weather

The weather can change quickly, so check the forecast each morning. Wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a water bottle, umbrella, light jacket or sunscreen can help you stay comfortable throughout the day.

Keep your CWRU ID and Discover Week name tag with you

Your CWRU ID is your key to many campus services, including meals in the dining halls. Your Discover Week name tag helps other students, Orientation Leaders, faculty and staff get to know you and serves as your pass to Discover Week events.

Make the week your own

Some activities during Discover Week are required because they provide important information for your success at CWRU. Beyond those, you'll have opportunities to explore campus, try new experiences and meet people. Participate in ways that feel right for you. Whether you leave the week with one new friend, several familiar faces or simply a better understanding of campus, you've had a successful start.

Most importantly, enjoy the experience. You belong here, and we're excited to welcome you to the CWRU community.
