Some of the most meaningful learning happens outside of the classroom. At Case Western Reserve University, these hands-on experiences are called experiential education. Simply put, experiential education means learning by doing.
Experiential education can take many different forms, including internships, undergraduate research, co-ops, clinical and practicum experiences, volunteer and service opportunities, leadership roles, and study abroad programs. These experiences allow you to apply what you are learning in class, explore career interests, develop new skills and build confidence along the way.
There is no one "right" way to participate in experiential education. Some students begin during their first year, while others wait until they have explored their interests or completed additional coursework. Whether you already have a career goal in mind or are still figuring out what excites you, there are opportunities available to meet you where you are.
To make exploring these opportunities easier, CWRU offers a centralized online database where you can search for experiences based on your interests, academic program and personal goals.
Over the next several weeks and throughout Discover Week, you'll learn more about experiential education and the many resources available to help you get involved. You'll meet staff from offices across campus; hear about internships, research, study abroad, service learning, co-ops, and other opportunities; and learn how to get started.
Many of our orientation leaders have participated in experiential education themselves. They'll share their experiences, answer your questions and offer advice about finding opportunities that fit your interests, strengths and goals.
Remember, you don't need to have your entire college journey or career path planned before you arrive on campus. Exploring different opportunities is part of the college experience, and we're here to help you discover what fits you best.
