As your departure for Madrid gets closer, now is the time to start thinking about what (and what not) to pack. You won’t need to bring everything—just the essentials to get you started and settled comfortably at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M).
Essentials first
- Passport and visa: Copies of passport and visa. Keep a hard copy and an electronic version. If you have not done so already, please send your visa update to cwruinmadrid@case.edu.
- Medications and prescriptions: Enough for your entire stay, along with copies of prescriptions (in original and translated versions). Please note, there are many medications that are legal in the U.S., but illegal in Europe (such as ADHD medications), so it is important that you check this in advance.
- Bring enough contacts to last the entire program. For glasses, bring a copy of the prescription in case they break.
- Electronics: Chargers for any electronic devices. (But do not bring hair dryers or anything else that heats up; it will be safer to purchase these in-country.) Spain uses Type C (more common) and F plugs and 230V electricity. Bring a converter and adapter for your U.S. devices.
Pack smart
- Luggage: Stick to one checked bag, a carry-on and a backpack. Space will be tight, so pack efficiently!
- Clothing: Madrid weather in the fall can vary. Pack layers—light jackets, sweaters and comfortable walking shoes. Bring a nicer outfit or two for special events.
- Everyday items: A reusable water bottle, a small first aid kit and copies of important documents (kept separate from originals) are must-haves.
Leave these at home
- Bulky winter gear: Buy it in Spain if needed.
- Excess toiletries: You can get these locally at any grocery store. The two closest to MiCampus are Lidl and Mercadona. Sephora and other high-end stores exist in Madrid for makeup, skin care, etc.
- Bedding: One set of bedding is provided by MiCampus. If you want to purchase additional bedding, that should be done once you arrive, as beds have different dimensions in Europe.
- Kitchen supplies: Each apartment will receive one Menaki Kitchen pack.
Final tips
- Check luggage weight limits before heading to the airport.
- Don’t pack at the last minute—give yourself time to organize!
- Download offline maps and translation apps before arrival.
