What kind of writer am I? Selecting your first-year seminar.

Case Western Reserve University’s Academic Inquiry Seminar self-selection process empowers first-year students to select a seminar that best suits their needs as college-level writers and thinkers. You will complete the self-selection module on your Roadmap. You will read an article, write a response to it, and answer questions related to your reading and writing experiences. You will be provided with materials to help you choose from among several different kinds of Academic Inquiry Seminar: descriptions of the courses available to you, a questionnaire about your writing and reading experience, and evaluative criteria you can use to self-assess your own writing.

Please note: You will not be able to register for classes until you complete this required Roadmap item.

Some students will take their Academic Inquiry Seminar in the first semester, while others will take it in the second semester. In early July, you will see a placeholder in your schedule letting you know when you are scheduled to take your Academic Inquiry Seminar. If you are scheduled to take it in your first semester, you will see AIQS 850F or AIQS 852F. If you are scheduled to take your Academic Inquiry Seminar in your second semester, you will see AIQS 850S.

If you are scheduled to take the course in your first semester:

  • If you selected Topical during the self-selection process, you will register yourself for an AIQS 100 (Topical) or AIQS 130 (Community-Engaged) course when you are registering for all of your other courses.
  • If you selected a Foundations Seminar during the self-selection process, you will register yourself for an AIQS 110 course when you are registering for all of your other courses.
  • If you selected a Seminar for Non-Native Speakers (AIQS 120 or AIAE 100) during the self-selection process, you will be placed in an AIQS section before registration begins as we have a limited number of sections available.

If you are scheduled to take the course in your second semester, you don’t need to register for it this summer. You will be prompted to enroll in the course when registering for courses for your second semester.
