Move-in is quickly approaching, and it is time for you and your student to think about Discover Week. The on-campus orientation program for parents and families runs Sunday, August 17 through Monday, August 18. You may be wondering how to support your student while also giving them the opportunity to branch out and begin their college journey.
Orientation Leaders have provided advice for parents and families attending Discover Week.
- Take advantage of the Parent and Family Orientation sessions as they are a great opportunity to get acquainted with CWRU and the opportunities and resources open to your child here. —Meghna
- Once you have powered through move-in, it's important to let the student get the full experience of Discover Week—meaning they should have independent time to go to all their meetings, events and time to enjoy themselves with people they have met/roommates. This is purely an adjustment period for the student to get situated into their college experience. Being there to try to assist your child with any struggles that they may have while adjusting is a great way to help. In the end, they are in good hands with campus resources (RAs, OLs, faculty, etc.) that can guide them in the right direction if they have future questions/concerns. —Ryan
- On move-in day, keep things positive and help with tasks, but give your student space to settle in. Encourage them to participate in orientation and campus activities, and stay connected through occasional check-ins while respecting their independence. —Shubham
- Let them take the lead during orientation and encourage them to step out of their comfort zone. For move-in, help them pack thoughtfully and stay calm during the chaos. Most importantly, remind them (and yourself) that it's OK not to have everything figured out—college is a process, and this is just the start. —Veer
