Helping your student create a packing list

Preparing for life on campus can be a fun way to spend time together this summer. Creating a college packing list and shopping for residence hall essentials can help your student feel more confident and prepared for move-in day.

If this is your family's first experience with college housing, you may have questions about what students really need to bring. A good rule of thumb is to start with the essentials. Residence hall rooms are designed for student living, but space is limited. Help your student think about which clothes, shoes, personal items and comfort items they use regularly, and which can be brought later if needed. Seasonal items, such as winter clothing, can often wait until the weather changes.

As you make plans, remember that every student has different needs. Some students feel most comfortable in a simple, uncluttered space, while others enjoy decorating and personalizing their room. Encourage your student to create a living space that supports their well-being, routines and comfort rather than trying to recreate a room they have seen on social media or Pinterest.

If your student has a roommate, encourage them to connect before move-in. Talking ahead of time can help them coordinate larger items, reduce duplicate purchases, save space and begin getting to know one another. These conversations can also help students discuss preferences and expectations before sharing a room.

Some students may benefit from bringing items that support their routines, focus, sensory preferences or overall comfort. Familiar bedding, lighting options, organizational tools, noise-reducing headphones, fidget items or other personal supports can help make a new environment feel more manageable and welcoming.

Once you arrive on campus, you may decide there are a few items your student still needs. Families will have free time on Sunday evening of Discover Week while students attend meetings with their orientation small group and residence hall community. This can be a convenient opportunity to shop for any last-minute necessities that were difficult to pack or purchase before traveling to campus.

Remember: No student arrives with everything figured out. The goal is not to create the perfect residence hall room on day one, but to help your student start their college experience feeling comfortable, supported and ready to grow.
