Letter from Gabi, 2025 orientation leader

Transitioning your child into college is never easy. There’s a strange ache that comes with watching them walk into a world you no longer have full access to. A campus full of buildings you’ve never stepped inside, filled with people you’ve never met. You wonder what their days look like, who they sit with, if they’re eating enough, if they feel lonely. You go from being their daily guide to someone cheering from a distance.

But here’s what I’ve learned: This distance isn’t the end of your relationship, it’s the beginning of a new kind of closeness. One built not on supervision, but on trust. On letting go, even when it’s hard, and believing that you’ve taught them well enough to carry themselves with integrity and courage.

Letting them go is how you both grow. It’s how they learn who they are outside the comfort of home and how you learn to love them not just as your child, but as a young adult, finding their way in the world. Even from miles away, your support matters. A call, a message, a reminder that you're still there cheering them on—it all adds up.

Welcome to the CWRU community.  We can’t wait to meet you!
