Special Collections Exhibit: The Cleveland Salon, 1920-1924
10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. | Kelvin Smith Library, Hatch Reading Room
In the 1920s, Cleveland, OH, was an epicenter of modern artistic thought. The Cleveland Salon, 1920-1924 features work from painter William Sommer, poet Hart Crane, architect William Lescaze, and theater designer Richard Rychtarik, showing how these artists influenced each other and their impact on national and international style. This exhibit was curated by Larry Waldman, Cleveland art historian. Please visit Kelvin Smith Library's Hatch Reading Room on the second floor at any time between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 to view the exhibit.

Putnam Sculpture Collection Walking Tour

Join us on an outdoor walking tour of CWRU’s Putnam Sculpture Collection for Parent & Family Weekend. Led by a CWRU staff member or alum, learn about seven contemporary works on Case Western’s North Side and Uptown. Dogs are welcome! This event is brought to you by The Sculpture Center. Meet at the TOUR flag outside of Garage S-46.

Music Event: Tales from Tin Pan Alley

Join Kelvin Smith Library for an opening reception, talk and musical performance, as well as an art gallery exhibit that uncovers the history of sheet music publishing and American culture from the Tin Pan Alley era (1895 through the mid-20th century). The combination of context and music excerpts provided by Associate Dean and Head of Popular Music Studies Dr. Daniel Goldmark will immerse audiences in a world that seems at once anachronistic, yet incredibly familiar to us today.

Presentation: Letting Go—Helping Your Student Grow and Be Successful

When should parents encourage independence? When should parents intervene? These are some of the questions many parents have in helping their students be as successful as possible in the college environment. This program will offer some insights into this rite of passage for students and a new lens for parents and families as they navigate Case Western Reserve University. Gardner D. Patterson has over 40 years of experience in Student Affairs and is an alumnus of CWRU. He will be joined in the last 30 minutes by student leaders to share their experiences on how their families have supported them during their journey.

The CWRU Film Society is a non-profit, student-run organization dedicated to the promotion of film as an art form. We make available to the university community films of artistic and cultural importance, as well as a number of the more popular films of recent years. The Great Gatsby (originally written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925) tells the story of writer and Wall Street trader Nick Carraway, and how he finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his mysterious millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby, amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age.

CWRU History Tour: Lake View Cemetery
9:30-11 a.m. | Lake View Cemetery
Lake View Cemetery located between Mayfield and Euclid Ave. at Cleveland's eastern boundary, is known for its hilly, manicured landscape graced by monuments of famous Clevelanders and overlooked by President James A. Garfield's Memorial. Learn about CWRU's history through stories of those buried at this historic site while you walk through a showcase of trees and shrubbery, cultivated for scientific, ornamental and educational purposes.
This tour will meet by the Euclid Avenue Gate and will be approximately 1.5 miles, on paved roads and grassy terrain that may be hilly or uneven at points. The walk will last roughly 90 minutes.

Cleveland Cultural Gardens Tour
10 a.m.–noon | Location TBD
The Cleveland Cultural Gardens are one of Northeast Ohio’s oldest and most beautiful treasures. Some 36 dedicated gardens, designed and cultivated by distinct cultural or nationality groups, adorn the drive along Martin Luther King Boulevard and East Boulevard in Rockefeller Park. Depicted in the gardens are the poets, philosophers, peacemakers, composers, scientists, and others who have contributed to world culture. Also featured in the gardens are symbolic sculptures and replicas of or tributes to sacred monuments in other lands.
Open House with CWRU President Eric Kaler

Drop in anytime between 12:30 and 2 p.m. at the Tinkham Veale University Center Grand Ballroom for our Parent and Family Weekend Open House on Saturday, Sept. 28! Enjoy light refreshments and snacks, take a family picture in our photo booth, and mingle with students, other families and members of the campus community. CWRU President Eric W. Kaler, his wife Karen Kaler, and other members of the university’s leadership team also will be on hand to meet and greet guests!

Come join the University Farm and the Student Sustainability Council on Saturday, Sept. 28. You’ll learn about the farm, the Farm Food Program, and more at SSC’s annual event. CWRU History Tour: 200 Years in the Making
2–3:30 p.m. | Adelbert Hall
Join us on a stroll across campus and through stories of CWRU's history! Learn about the university's beginnings, secrets, quirks, beauty and its fascinating past of almost 200 years. We'll begin at Adelbert Hall, walk through the Case Quad, and then cross Euclid to learn about the historic former campus of the Flora Stone Mather College for Women. Approx. 90 minutes. Wear comfortable shoes. Meet at the Hudson Relays Rocks outside Adelbert Hall.

Celebrate the Opening and Tour New Biology Laboratory Classrooms

Join President Eric Kaler and Interim Dean Peter Whiting to celebrate the opening of 30,000 square feet of state of the art biology laboratory classrooms and student collaborative spaces. Following the ceremony there will be an opportunity to tour the space with faculty from the Biology Department.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame: Cleveland Guardians vs. Houston Astros
7:10 p.m. | Progressive Field | Additional purchase required: $45 per person
We’re heading to Progressive Field in downtown Cleveland to watch the Guardians take on the Houston Astros. Cost of admission includes exclusive access to the Pennant District in Right Field, food and Pepsi products. Transportation will be available, though not required.
A limited number of tickets are available for this experience; pre-registration is required.
Student tickets are provided by the University Program Board and Graduate Student Council.

School of Nursing: Donuts with the Dean
9:30–10:30 a.m. | Cosgrove Courtyard, Samson Pavilion
Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing students along with their parents and families are invited to have Donuts with Dean Carol Musil. Faculty members and alumni will also be in attendance to meet and greet visitors.
In addition to donuts, a full savory breakfast will be available starting at 8:30 a.m. for those who may need to get on the road early.
The simulation lab and flight nursing area will be open and staffed for guests to see where students practice their nursing skills through hands-on training sessions that simulate real-life situations. Sit in a helicopter, listen to a lung, test your nursing knowledge!

Yes! The committee is excited that so many parents and family members want to visit CWRU this weekend. We are working on adding more events and opportunities, and putting together recommendations so that you can still explore campus, Cleveland and hang out with your student and their friends.
You can, but you will be sitting separately from the CWRU block. We’d recommend purchasing tickets for your entire party or join the waiting list if you’d like to sit together.
