Letter from Frank N. Linsalata, Chairman of the Board of Trustees

To the Case Western Reserve University Community:

Barbara Snyder
Barbara R. Snyder

I am delighted to write to the entire campus community with very good news regarding the presidential search. The Case Western Reserve University Board of Trustees in a unanimous vote elected Barbara R. Snyder to serve as the university's next president and first woman to hold this office. Her presidency will begin on July 1, 2007.

Ms. Snyder's years of experience as a professor, an academic leader and as the executive vice president and provost of The Ohio State University will be of tremendous benefit to our university as we set the agenda for the coming decade. She is an articulate and energetic proponent for the integral role research universities play in determining the scientific, cultural and political future of our world. She effortlessly combines the visionary leadership that sets ambitious goals with the day-to-day practical managerial experience that ensures measurable accomplishments. As Board Chair and as a Co-Chair of the search committee, I extend my warmest welcome to her and pledge my continuing efforts to work cooperatively for the university's success.

This announcement concludes a long and careful process that began this past summer and now culminates in the appointment of a strong and versatile leader for the university. I want to thank all of the people who labored diligently to reach this moment. This achievement would not have been possible without the unselfish service of all of the members of the presidential search committee. I am indebted to them, to the Presidents Advisory Group and to the Faculty Advisory Group. The contribution of these individuals to our success in this matter is incalculable. Their wise counsel and ongoing generosity with their time and talent made our task easier.

I want to acknowledge all of the university's dedicated alumni who responded to our request for information, ideas and opinions. Through your attendance at our Alumni Forums or through your correspondence with the committee, you have made an invaluable contribution to our university's success. I hope that you will continue to actively participate in the life of the university and will provide your support to our new president.

As we prepare for the transition to a new president, I want to thank Greg Eastwood, who interrupted his professional life to come to the assistance of the university. As a Board Member, Greg was already doing his fair share in service to Case Western Reserve University. Despite his imminent plans to take a sabbatical, Greg assumed the role of interim president and his presence on the campus has provided the stability and healing the university needed in order to move forward. I, and all members of the campus community, owe Greg Eastwood our sincere thanks and gratitude. His service to the university is inestimable.

I conclude by asking all of you to join with me in welcoming Barbara Snyder to Case Western Reserve University and in wishing her every success in her new role as president.

Frank N. Linsalata, Chairman of the Board of Trustees
