To the Case Western Reserve community:
Over the past week, we have seen numerous executive orders issued by the Trump administration. These measures could significantly impact how we as a university operate, from where we receive critical funding, how we conduct research, with whom and how we can collaborate on impactful projects, and, importantly, who can study and work at Case Western Reserve.
Yesterday, the acting director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a memo temporarily pausing agency grant, loan and other financial assistance programs. It is unclear what the full scope of this memo is as well as its legality. However, we believe it could have a considerable impact on our current and pending federal funding.
Please know that we have a team of individuals both within and outside the university analyzing the impacts of this memo as well as the executive orders. We are also working with colleagues at universities across the country as well as our advocacy groups.
We will update the university community as soon as we have clarity on the impacts to our federal grants. Additionally, we will provide guidance to our researchers.
For now, if you are contacted by your agency or program officer to make a change on grant spending, please provide this information to Joan Schenkel, associate vice president for research administration, at joan.schenkel@case.edu.
This morning, the Department of Education confirmed that the OMB memo does not pause Federal Pell Grants and Direct Loans.
Thank you for your patience. Please know that understanding the impacts of the memo and executive orders is our highest priority right now.
Sincerely,
Eric W. Kaler
President
