A fresh start: Welcome to a new year and new semester

To Our Case Western Reserve University Community:

Welcome back to campus for the start of a new year and a new semester of learning, discovery, and scholarship. We also extend warm greetings to those who are new to Case Western Reserve—you have joined an institution made stronger by our shared focus on impact and our mission to innovate and educate in ways that improve lives and outcomes. We are fortunate that every day, we engage in research centered on solving the world’s most pressing challenges.

We have much to look forward to in this spring 2025 semester.

On Friday, Feb. 7, we invite you to join our Bicentennial Kickoff at the Tinkham Veale University Center for an afternoon of fun, food and music. The event is the first of our celebrations to prepare for our bicentennial in 2026. We appreciate the hard work of so many from across the university in planning this kickoff and making all of our future bicentennial events special.

This semester, some new faces will join our leadership team. On Jan. 21, Brian Burnett begins his role as executive vice president and chief financial officer, and on March 1, we will welcome David Gerdes as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. We look forward to their contributions to our university community.

Also, this week, we will launch a unified campus calendar in CampusGroups. This central location for events will provide a clearer view of what’s happening at Case Western Reserve for all members of our community. Thank you to our University Marketing and Communications and Student Affairs teams for leading this important and helpful transition.

These early days of 2025 are not only the start of a new semester; they are times of change for our university, our country and the world. At Case Western Reserve, we continue to embrace the strength we gain through the diversity of our entire community, as well as to uphold our commitment to freedom of expression while maintaining the safety of our community for all students, faculty and staff.

I wish you success this spring semester and throughout 2025.

Sincerely,
Eric W. Kaler
President
