To the Case Western Reserve University community,
Yesterday’s tragedy at Brown University, and another overnight in Australia, are grave reminders of the dangers that can persist, even in areas that we typically view as safe.
Though there have been no threats against or security concerns at our university, we know how unsettling these events, no matter how far their locations, can be. Therefore, effective immediately, the university is increasing security and police presence and, as of Monday, Dec. 15, around 7 a.m., all buildings on the Case Western Reserve University campus will move to card-access only for the remainder of the month.
Building access will be available as follows:
- Academic buildings: All faculty, staff and student IDs will work in every academic building.
- Administrative buildings: ID card access will be limited to those who work within each specific administrative building. Those needing access to additional buildings for business purposes should coordinate in advance with their colleagues in these buildings.
- Residence halls: Access to residence halls will remain only available to those living in these buildings or with work needs. Please know that this move may cause some access issues; please call the CWRU Police non-emergency number at 216.368.3300 or contact a nearby police or security officer if you need assistance gaining access to a building. Especially because many of you are in the midst of finals, we encourage you to arrive at your buildings early to ensure you do not have any issues.
As a reminder, do not:
- prop interior or exterior doors at any time,
- hold an outside door open for strangers, or
- allow strangers to “piggyback” on your access card.
Thank you in advance for your patience as we work through this solution to help ensure the continued safety of our university community.
Sincerely,
Eric W. Kaler
