Why did you choose CWRU?
I chose Case Western Reserve University because I wanted to continue my basketball career while getting a top-notch education at the Mandel School, one of the best social work schools in the country. Knowing about the basketball team's success here, especially since my undergrad team played against them, solidified my decision. After a great talk with Coach Todd McGuinness, I knew this was where I wanted to be.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
The gym! I feel like that's the basic answer for basketball players. There's a lot going on and it's where all the action is, with athletes from different sports all coming together. Whether it's swimmers, wrestlers or folks in PE classes, there's always something happening. It's a hub of athletic energy that I love being a part of.
What is your favorite class and/or professor?
My favorite class has been Group Practice, which taught us how to effectively lead groups in various social work settings, whether in workshops, group therapy or other formats. My professor for that class, Dr. Michael Rhodes, is actually the reason it was my favorite class. Not only did I learn practical skills for leading groups in social work settings, but Dr. Rhodes himself demonstrated effective group leadership with our class every day. It made learning feel tangible and real, which was incredibly valuable.
What extracurricular activities are you involved in?
Back home in Washington D.C., I run a youth program focused on mentorship. While the program I directed lost funding, I continue to mentor the kids, helping with school issues and offering support whenever I can. It's fulfilling to make a difference in their lives, even from afar.
As part of my social work program, I work with the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Ohio. I organize events like basketball games and also work on administrative tasks and research. Recently, I've been exploring how youth development impacts disciplinary practices—a topic that's both challenging and crucial.
What is your best memory as a CWRU athlete?
Our recent UAA game victory stands out! It was a validation of our hard work and a reminder of our potential as a team. Also, the camaraderie I felt when meeting my teammates for the first time was unforgettable. It reinforced that I'm part of a great group, both on and off the court.
