Churchill Scholarship

About

The Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States was established in 1959 to encourage the exchange of knowledge and ideas between the United States and Great Britain. To this end, it established a scholarship program to enable outstanding American students to do graduate work in engineering, mathematics and science at Churchill College at Cambridge University in England. The scholarship provides the opportunity to pursue graduate studies at one of the world's greatest universities. In addition, the scholarship also offers the rewards associated with living abroad, of experiencing a different way of life and of seeing the world, one's own country and oneself from a new perspective.

At least 15 Churchill Scholarships are offered annually. The Scholarship is tenable from nine to 12 months, in accordance with the academic program.

Eligibility

• an American citizen
• enrolled in a college or university which participates in the competition
• upon taking up a Churchill Scholarship, must be between the ages of 19-26
• must hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a U.S. college or university, and may not have attained a doctorate

Qualifications

• achievement in academic work as indicated by course grades
• GRE scores
• capacity for original, creative work as shown by special recognition and letters of reference
• character, adaptability, demonstrated leadership and concern for the critical problems of society
• good health

Application Procedure

1. CWRU can only nominate up to two candidates each year, so there is an on-campus preliminary screening.

2. Schedule an appointment to meet with Dean LaTasha Johnson, preferably during your junior year but no later than July 1 prior to your senior year, to discuss your goals and plan to compete in this scholarship process.

3. Review the instructions and guidelines for applicants here, and then begin the national application found on the Churchill Scholarships website. Register Dean Johnson/Case Western Reserve University as endorser/endorsing University, if applicable.

4. Send the following to LaTasha Johnson at lxt229@case.edu by the campus deadline of Sept. 15, 2023:

• Resume
• 1-page proposed program of study
• 2-page personal statement
• Correspondence with a potential lab supervisor (if applicable)
• Four letters of recommendation
• An official transcript

Preference will be for the aforementioned application documents to be sent in one singular PDF to Dean Johnson at lxt229@case.edu. Recommendation letters should be submitted separately by the letter writer either electronically to lxt229@case.edu or via US/campus mail to the Office of Undergraduate Advising Support, Case Western Reserve University, 447 Sears Building, 10900 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106-7028. Official transcripts can be mailed or hand-delivered to the Office of Undergraduate Studies as well.

5. Campus interviews are required for all candidates. Times will be identified for interviews based on your class schedule and committee availability. Interviews will take place in September. (See schedule below.)

6. If selected as one of the two candidates to represent CWRU, you will be advised on the next steps in the national application process by Dean Johnson. Please be advised that the next steps will include connecting with a laboratory at Cambridge, obtaining additional recommendation letters, and applying separately for admission to the University of Cambridge by mid-October.

Value of the Award

The Churchill Scholarship is worth around $60,000, depending on the exchange rate. It covers all University and College fees (currently about $40,000). In addition, Churchill Scholars receive a living allowance of 11,000 pounds if enrolled in a nine-month program, 14,000 pounds  if enrolled in a 10- or 11-month program, and 15,000 pounds if enrolled in a full-year program. They receive an allowance of up to $1,500 for travel to and from the United Kingdom, as well as reimbursement of applications fees for a U.K. visa (currently more than $500).

The Foundation also offers the possibility of a Special Research Grant of up to $2,000; this grant may cover travel for presentations at international conferences, short stays at another university or institute for special research, and other activities.
