As a professor, receiving one faculty award is a proud achievement during the span of a career. But taking home two prestigious faculty awards in the same semester? That requires an entire different mix of dedication, passion and technique. A mix that one Weatherhead School of Management professor upholds each day in the classroom.
For the first time in the history of the university, Jenny Hawkins, assistant professor of economics at Weatherhead School of Management, was awarded both the Wittke Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Jackson Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mentoring in the same year.
The awards were presented by Case Western Reserve University President Barbara Snyder and Provost Ben Vinson during a surprise visit to her classroom at the end of April.
The Carl F. Wittke Award was established in 1971 in honor of Carl Wittke, a former faculty member, dean and vice president of Western Reserve University and is presented each year to two CWRU faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching.
The Jackson Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mentoring recognizes the positive impact Case Western Reserve University faculty and staff have on the lives of students. It was established by J. Bruce Jackson, Adelbert '52, in honor of Dean Carl F. Wittke, who served as an advisor, mentor, and friend to Dr. Jackson when he was an undergraduate student at Case Western Reserve University.
These awards come in tandem with a recent announcement of Hawkins receiving the WSOM Undergraduate Teaching Award this year which recognizes exemplars in teaching.
