In his talk Daniel Goldmark, Professor in the Department of Music, will consider how the popular songs produced in Cleveland in the early 20th century exemplify the way cities in the early 1900s actively built their own image- both musically and visually- by harnessing local industries. He will also look in detail at the lives of two local artists- Ora Coltman and Ray Parmelee- and how their work in the graphic arts trade, including the art they created to adorn sheet music covers, exemplifies the way commercial artists were perceived and valued in the early 20th century.
