What can students do with their world language skills as a result of their enrollment in language courses? Are they able to handle simple conversations after two semesters' learning and engage in a scholarly discussion using the language of study after three years? The impetus of this 3-year project is to promote proficiency-based language learning and teaching in the DMLL through the annual use of the ACTFL OPI standardized assessment tool across three Asian language sections and levels. The project goals are threefold. First, students will stay informed of their language proficiency levels on the nationally recognized scale on a yearly basis during their language learning at Case. Second, the project aims to raise language instructors' awareness of the critical role of language proficiency progression in student's learning journey. Third, the OPI data will enable the DMLL to provide evidence-supported curricular information pertaining to what tasks Case students can accomplish with their world language skills at the conclusion of each level of the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean instruction in the department. In this presentation Ching-Hsuan Wu, Erik Børve Endowed Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics, will share an overview of the project and report an update on the project.
An informal lunch will be served.
