Craig Newmark (CIT ’75; GRS ’77, computer science)

In 1995, Craig Newmark founded a classified advertisement website, Craigslist, as a regularly emailed list of San Francisco events. It grew its content categories from housing to furniture listings, and became one of the most-visited websites in the U.S. He stepped down as chief executive officer of the company in 2000.

In 2015, Newmark founded Craig Newmark Philanthropies, fueling a variety of efforts for citizen journalism, voter protections, veterans’ causes and women’s issues—including the launch of the Women in Tech Initiative at Case Western Reserve University.
